Media Release / Robbery Investigation and Arrest

Incident: #1912C-3339

Summary: On 12-16-19 at about 0230 hrs., an unidentified male adult entered the AM/PM convenience store at 68500 Ramon Rd, brandished a pistol at the clerk and demanded the clerk open a locked refrigeration display case.  The suspect then took a bottle of beer from the case and fled on foot.  Officers responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation which included viewing the store surveillance video.  The suspect was ID-ed by investigating officers and witnesses and arrest information was distributed to local law enforcement agencies.

On 12-20-19, an off-duty CCPD officer saw the suspect, working at a business in the 67000 block of East Palm Canyon in Cathedral City.  Detectives were notified and responded as CCPD patrol officers located and contacted the suspect.  The suspect was taken into custody without incident and was transported to CCPD where he was interviewed and admitted to the armed robbery.  A search for the weapon was conducted with negative results.  The arrestee has been identified as BAYRON MATA, a 28 year old resident of Cathedral City.  The suspect was later booked at the Riverside Co. Jail and is being held on $30,000 bail.
